Echoes of Liberty: A Watertown Tribute to July 4th
Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine it’s the year 1775.
The air is heavy with tension. Muskets are being loaded. Horses thunder down dusty roads. Word spreads like fire through the colonies: British troops have fired on militiamen in Lexington and Concord.
The fight for freedom has begun.
But where do the patriots go next? When Boston becomes too dangerous, where do the leaders of this fragile revolution regroup?
They come to Watertown.
Watertown: Where Independence Took Root
Long before the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, Watertown, Massachusetts was already on the frontlines of American freedom.
Just days after the first shots of the Revolution, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress — the rebel government — fled Boston and set up its seat in Watertown. Here, in this quiet riverside town, they met in secret, drafted legislation, and laid the foundation for self-rule.
Imagine the scene:
Lanterns flickering in the windows of taverns turned into war rooms.
Citizens posting lookouts along the Charles River.
Debates echoing through halls as men with everything to lose dared to imagine a new world — one without kings, without tyranny.
Watertown became more than a safe haven. It became the voice of resistance.
In fact, one of the first international treaties signed by the emerging United States — the Treaty of Watertown — was inked right here with Indigenous allies who supported the revolution.
This was no longer just a rebellion. It was the start of something world-changing.
Independence Then, and Now
Fast forward nearly 250 years.
The drums of war are silent, but the spirit of independence still lives here — in our homes, our streets, and yes, even in our businesses.
Independence today means:
The freedom to choose your path, build your future, and stand for what matters.
The responsibility to serve, give back, and strengthen your community.
The courage to lead, even when the road ahead is uncertain.
At ME Companies, headquartered here in Watertown, we don’t take that lightly. We’re inspired daily by the legacy of those who came before us — who built something from nothing and dared to dream of a better world.
A Message from Us to You
This July 4th, we’re not just celebrating fireworks and hot dogs (though we love those too). We’re celebrating the boldness, the vision, and the unity that sparked a revolution — right here in our own backyard.
So as you enjoy the long weekend, take a moment to look around.
The homes we wire.
The businesses we power.
The minds we inspire.
🇺🇸 All of it — made possible because a few brave people decided that freedom was worth fighting for.
From the team at ME Companies — Happy Independence Day.
May we honor the past, live with purpose in the present, and build a future worthy of those who gave us the chance to be free.
